Most reviews of Young Living Essential Oils boast them to be the world’s best essential oils.
But is this really so? Are there no other comparable essential oils as good in quality and purity, as Young Living?
Plus: is it really true that Young Living’s quality is so outstanding? What is it, that sets them apart?

In this article, these are the questions we’ll openly discuss.
A Brief Company History
Young Living was established in 1993 by Gary Young. He is a committed founder, and came up with a proprietary production process, which he named Seed to Seal®.
Young Living Essential Oils reviews by independent peers consistently give high marks. That is why many people consider them to be “the best in the essential oils industry”. What, then, is the secret of Young Living Essential Oils all these years? I managed to roam online and discovered some exciting news about what many considered as “the World’s Best” – Young Living Essential Oils.
Young Living’s Quality Assurance
With my curiosity aroused, I began to ask the question – what is the truth about Young Living oils? What do most Young Living Essential Oils reviews really say about these wonderful herbal spa, bath and body care products?
Many articles across the web emphasize that the secret of Young Living Essential Oils is all in the process of production.
As compared to other essential oil brands in the market, Gary Young’s quality standards & control (QSC) as well as the distillation process of Young Living essential oil-based products is the most extensively-researched production process. While QSC for other essential oil brands may be subjected to strict requirements and independent-testing also, only Young Living Essential Oils offer the proprietary Seed to Seal production process.
This distillation process itself is a remarkable feature of the production of Young Living Essential Oils. As compared to other brands, which use low-heat steam distillation process and compression or cold pressed without any additives, Young Living oils are processed in a slow steam extraction procedure which effectively brings out the essential oils without any unwanted adulteration.

Are Young Living Essential Oil Certified Organic?
During my research, I came across the question of whether or not Young Living essential oils are certified organic or not.
According to Young Living customer service:
“To provide organic products to our members is very important and we strive to use organic matter in all the steps from growing, processing, to selling. We do not use chemical fertilizers or pesticides on our farms. Young Living cannot place the word ‘organic’ on our labels because we occasionally import some oils from different countries and most of these countries do not have organic standards that match the US standards. This is the reason why we cannot certify them as organic. Rest assured, though, that Young Living will not accept oils or plants that do not meet our strict standards.” YL Customer Service
Young Living Educates About Oil Benefits
Young Living Essential Oils have transcended their aesthetic use and reached out to people to share their beauty and wellness benefits as well.
The company has created an official Essential Oils Guide where you can learn about the advantages Young Living Essential Oils have over other essential oil brands in the market today.
For example, we can summarize the health benefits of therapeutic-grade essential oils (referring, of course, to the pure and organic Young Living Essential Oils).

- Over-all raising of immunity to ailments (chamomile, clove)

Where to Buy Young Living Essential Oils
Young Living is a so-called “MLM” – multi-level marketing company. This means, the company sets up sales representatives on a tiered scheme and ordering program, whereby everyone in the group gets a commission cut.
If you find a Young Living representative in your area, chances are they have been recruited and sub-recruited by someone above them, and someone else above them yet. This means that every person above you and above you and above you makes money off of your purchase, too. And they’ll try to sign you up as a member, too! The initial discounts – a “member starter kit” – offers great value. But once you’ve become a member “under them”, they make money off you & your referrals, every time you or your friends make a purchase.
You Don’t Have to Be a Member to Buy
There is no requirement of a monthly order in a wholesale membership with Young Living. There is an optional auto ship program where members earn free products and points for ordering monthly – but it is not a requirement. To keep a wholesale membership open, one only has to order 50 PV (“Purchase Volume”) per YEAR. And, even at that, if an account goes inactive, it only takes a 50 PV wholesale order to re-activate. 1 PV equals to $1 USD.
If you choose to sign up as a member for Young Living oils, all of the starter kit and Essential Rewards program options are optional. I’ve successfully signed up as a member so I could have all of this information for you – without spending a cent!
That said, I do feel that nobody should overprice essential oils, or make unnecessary extra money off of their friends when they buy oils, as that might become more stressful than sweet. This whole sales structure also explains some of the steep pricing of Young Living essential oils as it would have to account for everybody’s piece of the commissions pie. Still – I do stand by the opinion that Young Living oils are of high quality and well-made.
Yes, You Can Buy Young Living Oils Online
To avoid this signup and membership circus altogether, there are private sellers that distribute Young Living products as one-off purchases. For example, you can get the popular Everyday Oils Starter Kit here or the Young Living exclusive Thieves® oil blend here.
Yes, this IS legitimate!
Under Young Living’s U.S. Policies and Procedures, members may use websites to sell Young Living products, given that they comply with the requirements outlined in the policies.
Some of these requirements are:
- Display the Young Living Independent Distributor logo prominently.
- Must register the website to be used for sales, with Young Living.
- Such website must have a mechanism for receiving customer feedback and answering in a timely manner.
One such legitimate online distributor is 911HealthShop.com. They have been Young Living Distributors for approximately 10 years now. Their website was approved and authorized by Young Living’s Conduct & Compliance department years before the new retail policy took into effect. Not only are they grandfathered, but they are fully compliant. In fact, they passed again with flying colors this past September of 2019 and have Young Living’s blessing’s to continue retailing of their products on their website.
As a side note, Young Living’s current policy even allows brick and mortar retail store’s to sell the products to consumers without requiring customer’s signup with Young Living.
Switching Away from Young Living Oils
If you’re currently with Young Living but don’t want to continue to buy from them, maybe it’s time to look at other essential oil brands.
It can be hard to compare apples to apples, but I’ve done my best in the following articles:
- Plant Therapy vs Young Living: Scared to switch? Read this first!
- Edens Garden vs Young Living: A direct brand comparison.
I would also highly suggest Rocky Mountain Oils. They are amazing quality at fair prices (but not too cheap to make you question the quality). They’re certainly comparable in the broad list of essential oils they offer.
Are you really undecided on which direction to go with essential oils? Feel free to email me as well.
If You’re A Young Living Thieves Fan
One of the many claims to fame of the Young Living essential oil brand is their line-up of Thieves® products: household cleaners, sprays, soaps, and of course simply an oil bottle of the proprietary blend. I’m no exception here, I think “Thieves” is a great product!
However – as with everything, there are many fine alternatives to the Young Living Thieves blend and I have written about them here.

Young Living Diffusers
Young Living makes a few varieties of essential oil diffusers. One of the most popular current models is the Desert Mist Home Diffuser, a very solid and well-made diffuser unit. Its slick on/off buttons at the front of the “rose” make it easy to operate, including an on/off switch for ambient light settings.
This diffuser will help you create a spa-like ambiance in your home in no time.

It sounds like some people have had a negative experience but the info the give is incorrect. I joined YL a few years ago. It was not until this year that I understood the Essential Rewards program. And that is exactly what it is. I have never seen a Reward program where you just received rewards without doing something to earn them. I have never felt any pressure from those in the tier above me. Rather, I have been given a lot of educational information from inside and outside of YL that over time has pro commitment led me to buy and try some pretty amazing products. As soon as I opened up the vitamins, the aroma provided an entirely new experience of freshness. I doubt I will ever go back to store ones again. So yes, maybe more expensive but I am worth it. Though I can surely understand how this can be expensive for someone on a tight budget just like choosing fresh foods over packaged foods. And, all those store brought have a chain with everyone taking a piece of the action too. It is after all a business not a charity.
Mona
Great oils but terrible shipping
Mel Abbott
Have been using YL for I’d say just over 10 years signed up for monthly orders and since last year just casual ordering. I love their oils, really do and have appreciated having them in our lives. Living in NZ it does make things financially abit tighter as you have to convert prices then add on international shipping so my collection is worth a lot lol. Recently I’ve been looking at other companies and feel really excited about what’s out there and am going to do a couple of orders.
I believe YL are also more expensive as they pay for the insurance to be able to say that you can take their oils internally, a lot of smaller companies cannot afford it or will just not have that as part of their statement to keep the price down but I don’t believe that makes their oils anymore inferior.
Anyway will be interesting to see and looking forward to trying some new oils.
Sam
I think since these oils can be used on/in the body and people that are cared for, I have to seriously consider what is of the best quality because essential oils are very strong, and should not be taken lightly, skimping wouldn’t make sense. I get that the most expensive doesn’t mean the best, but I don’t believe that being expensive without merit will not allow a company to be as successful as Young Living is.
Even considering what has been negatively posted, even with words like “scheme”, not “certified organic”, it really hasn’t changed my mind, but I do appreciate that it has been looked at. Go with what you feel is truly the best quality, and for me, it’s been Young Living.
jennie
do these actually work, I am desperate for help with very bad anxiety from my SIBO
Lisa
I appreciate everyone’s personal point of view as well as experiences, but to bash a solid company seems harsh (Brenda). Young Living must be doing something correct as it has been going strong for over 20 years. Not all of these essential oil users of Young Living products can possibly be bullied or wool pulled over their eyes. As for the Essential Rewards program, I NEVER expect anyone to sign up for this UNLESS they know they will be ordering 50PV of product each month. If this is the case, they are able to then receive perks, everyone enjoys perks! I have used a couple other companies for my essential oils and ended my company hopping with YL due to the quality. That is what I speak about when talking to others. I do not put down other companies, I am a better person than that. No matter what company you choose, there are always bad seeds, just don’t be one of them!
Courtney
You do NOT have to do a monthly subscription if you do not want to. This needs to be updated for accuracy. Otherwise, overall this is a great article. ❤️
Susan
Unless the oil comes directly from the company you can’t be 100% its pure, bottles can be tampered with
Melissa
Not necessarily true. Edens Garden and DoTerra both sell their products on Amazon.
chris
There is absolutely NO monthly purchasing requirement with Young Living. There is one yearly commitment of $50, yearly NOT monthly. And if you don’t want to spend $50 in 12 months, then so be it; then you obviously don’t need the membership, and just let it expire. There is a optional rewards program in order to gain rewards there are minimum purchases, however the rewards program is completely optional. Also go on YouTube and look at “I still think it’s a pyramid scheme” Young Living is not a scheme. Seriously people need to check the facts before blasting things online, which is there forever for everyone to think it’s accurate. People don’t even know what a pyramid scheme is, or they wouldn’t even mention it on here. And for the comment on all YL reps are like pit bulls, again more inaccuracy. All the YL I know are very sweet, down to earth people, they may be compassionate on oils, but if that’s the worse thing, let’s all be thankful. So much negativity spewed online it’s nice to have some all natural positiveness for once.
leslie martinez
does young living have any product that can help with hormonal unbalance?
Emma
Hi Leslie. They have a few products for this purpose. Have a look here: Young Living Targeted Support: Hormones. I’ve heard good results with the “Dragon Time” oil.
You can get it on Amazon for the best price here.
Christie Brennan
Progessence Plus is the best product for hormone imbalances. It is a bioidentical form of progesterone that will balance out an estrogen dominance (which is OFTEN what causes hot flashes, menstrual pains, PPD, skin issues, etc etc etc).
Ansley
I don’t know if you’re still struggling with hormonal imbalance, but I have used Progessence Plus with success. I no longer suffer from debilitating cramps, mood swings (other than when my kids make me crazy lol), or acne.
Jen
I think Young Living has high quality oils. But I do not believe that because they grow their own plants and control their sourcing means that their oils are the best. They do not grow their plants in areas of the world where that plant grows the best (indigenous to that plant). As such, the chemical profile of the oil will not be as robust or complete.
Carol Runkle
Young Loving only Oils I have tried but very pleased so no need to try others!
Carol Runkle
Can I mix Lemon and Frankincense in diffuser for uvongrstion and cough or better to just use one?
Also which would be good to rub directly on throat and chest?
Deanna
Everything that Rachel said is 100% correct. Pyramid schemes are illegal. Young Living and other reputable MLMs who are clearly operating within the law cannot be labeled pyramid schemes. To do so is to perpetuate a misunderstanding at best. The costs depend upon many factors, including how rare or hard to source a particular oil may be, as well as how much plant material is needed to produce a bottle of essential oil, and how expensive the plant is to begin with. Roses are more expensive than lemons, so rose oil will be more expensive than lemon oil. Of course, truly pure oils will be more costly to produce than those that are diluted with chemicals or fillers.
Marsha
Thanks for everyone’s comments. They have helped me choose or not choose since I am just starting out with essential oils. I do believe that any MLM company has higher prices and I need to keep my cost at a minimum yet get pure oils.
Michelle Herrington
Marsha,
I know this is a couple of years old, but I was wondering if you ever started using oils and if so, which company you chose?
Melissa
I have had the pyramid scheme argument with my husband a couple of times. While it technically isn’t a pyramid scheme, many feel, or at the very least categorize MLM’s into that for their quick understanding of the way the company is set up. I ‘ve been using YL for 2 years now. The first year I signed up for a monthly obligation. I was building my collection. After it felt I had an adequate supply I removed myself from that program and only purchase on an as needed basis. I was just speaking to the lady that I signed up under because the top person in our “team” recently was doing a push for people to join on the business side of YL. When she took a screen shot of her monthly commission check it actually made me want to go find a new oil company. It kind of explains why the cost is so high. We might not be forced to purchase each month, but some strong sales people in the company make you feel like you have to purchase more and more products for greater savings, but all that’s doing is draining your pocket and cushioning at least 2-4 other people’s pockets…
Sherri
Melissa YL compensation model is the best in the business. We all work very hard for our paychecks and it really shouldn’t matter who the money goes to bc at the end of the day, I receive my products I pay for. What does it matter if the money goes to one person or divided amongst several ppl. It’s honest money! If you put in the hard work and treat ppl like a friend and not a $$ sign then ppl will see your not about the almighty dollar, it’s about building relationships first. Thats the YL way I can tell you as I’m a distributor. I don’t hassle ppl for sales. It’s fun to use the product around others and organically make sales as a result of a newfound, meaningful friendship. I have seen many ppl healed of many things that just can’t happen with other oils bc they lack the quality. I believe the conscensus will agree here that nobody has had big, significant testimonies like YL customers/distributors testify of. Blessings to all?
Shawna
Sherri, so thankful for your intelligent explanation of MLM.
So many people don’t understand that in an MLM company it’s the people sharing the product that get the paycheck, not the corporations or top owner.
Young Living is a HUGE Billion dollar business. That is NOT negitive. Think about a company being able to do over a BILLION dollars in sales. That means something is working or everyone would tell everyone else NOT you buy the product. Tree only place I ever see negitive comments about Young Living is in threads like this.
Holly
Thanks Rachel, for clearing that up. I am a member of Young Living and I don’t HAVE to make regular purchases. I buy what I want/need. And the quality of YL EO’s is apparent!
Rachel
True, Young Living is a network marketing company or mlm, but it most definitely is not a pyramid scheme nor are members required to order monthly.
A pyramid scheme is a business model that recruits members via a promise of payments or services for enrolling others into the scheme, rather than supplying investments or sale of products or services.*Definition from Wikipedia.org* In reality, Young Living is no different than any other wholesale buying club such as Costco or Sam’s Club. You buy a membership in order to purchase products at a wholesale price only with Young Living, you purchase a lifetime membership not a yearly one. Every wholesale member pays the same price so the people who joined the company aren’t actually making money “off of you”. You can sign up straight with the company with no upline. A typical business structure spends millions of dollars yearly on advertising whereas a mlm company funnels that money into commissions.
Also, when you join Young Living, you have the option to join their monthly autoship rewards program but that’s exactly what it is, optional. You can join YL and buy 3 bottles of oil a year if you so choose or even none at all. There are absolutely no required purchases unless you choose, of your own free will, to sign up for the monthly autoship.
Kinchit Markan
It probably is a pyramid scheme just look at their income disclosure statement. https://static.youngliving.com/en-US/PDFS/IDSOnlineVersion_PDF_US.pdf
88.8% of their “members” are of distributor rank and earn an average of $4 Dollars monthly.
In their membership agreement it also mentions you are REQUIRED to purchase a monthly quantity of 50 PV. You have only 1 month grace period. Im not an expert but this does seem like a pyramid scheme.
https://static.youngliving.com/SHARED/LEGAL/en_US-distributor_agreement.pdf
Here is a link to a John Oliver show that covered MLM. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6MwGeOm8iI
Courtney
If you look at the application you put a link to, the Essential Rewards are the monthly subscriptions. It says it is optional. $50 is if you want to STAY in ER.
Vicki
Funny how some of you think you know the answers. I was a member of YL for over 2 years prior to CHOOSING to join essential rewards and spend $50/month. I never HAD to join the monthly part, but I CHOSE to (just 3 months ago, again after being a member for free for over 2 years). After taking an aromatherapy certification class that has NO affiliation to young living, and doing tons of online podcasts, again, with no affiliation to YL, I decided YL is my best choice. I CHOSE to make a monthly purchase because I LOVE my essential oils!
As for pyramid schemes…you don’t get what you pay for in a pyramid scheme. You agree to spend money and do spend it for products you never receive. With YL, you receive what you pay for (and then some), & if there’s ever an issue, the customer service team is great.
Heather
Vicki what course and podcast do you recommend for a newbie to EO and YL?
Thank you
Abdullah Aqrabawi
They have the worst service I saw in my life, I spent 2 weeks waiting for my registration approval from their “verify me” department and for no reason, they stopped answering. Shame on you, it’s a very expensive product and very bad customer service.
Patrick OConnor
My goodness, do your research on what a pyramid scheme is and you’ll see that YL’s MLM is not one! Pyramid schemes are very illegal, the people involved do no work, get no products or services, and the leaders go to jail when caught.
YL’s MLM is great. Our orders come to us quickly, they’re of top quality, and we get paid in product, product discounts and freebies, and in money.
Please don’t smear what is a very reputable company.
Courtney
This comment is 100% true about the monthly subscription. You don’t have to set up monthly orders. That’s a choice. I love this.
Brenda B
Unfortunately much of what you read of YL and Gary Young is the result of a very good marketing and legal team. YL is know to buy in the marketplace just as many other large companies do, just because they have ‘farms’ means nothing, so do other buyers who have the same. They act like they are the only ones who do such wonderful things. The reason their oils are more expensive has nothing to do with all their mumbo jumbo on growing ‘seed to seal’. It is because it is what it is – an MLM company. Money and profits need to be made for all those down line people sell, sell, sell to make the up line people get their money. The quality may be fair to good but they are not the best in the whole wide world. There are numerous good quality companies in this industry and for YL to discount them with their clever and aggressive marketing is the one reason I as an Aromatherapist would never even consider using or selling them. YL and DoTerra both have been busted in third party testing to show what they are passing off is indeed adulterated. If anyone speaks out against them their legal team pounces. I call that being insecure and not very transparent and certainly a company I would not do business with. Those who sell are like pit bulls when anyone disagrees with them. I have read posts and in FB groups from the crudest and rudest of these sales reps and have left groups because of their drama. That is not the kind of vibe I want to be associated with. To each their own I guess. I prefer to stick with the real experts when it comes to essential oils and aromatherapy. Just speaking my mind. Thanks :)
Melissa S
Interesting! Brenda, what company do you recommend?
Ava
The Ananda Apothecary is best on the market (I have personally found) for essential oils. They will tell you where all of their oils are from as well.
Jackie
I’ve never experienced any of that with YL. Also, you do NOT have to purchase every month at all. To keep a wholesale membership, you only have to purchase $50.00 in one year’s time. It is not a pyramid scheme. The only people who agree to purchase $50.00 a month are those who have chosen to join the Essential Rewards program. They earn cheaper shipping, bonus oils…
Cyndi
Interesting, sounds like Brenda is bitter about something…. perhaps she should do actual research and not depend on FB groups or other posts or just “a crazy oil lady” (lol, aka a VERY passionate oil lady!) to make her mind up for her. I would also like to see these third-party results busting YL for “adulterating” their oils…
Vicki
Thank you Jackie and Cindy! Brenda must be bitter. She probably got kicked out of the company for making claims about EO’s curing something and the FDA probably froze her account so to speak. As for the author saying becoming a member make a you commit to month to month spending, your information is false. You MAY commit to month to month spending if you CHOOSE to join essential rewards, and that being said, joining essential rewards offers great perks (rewards). Oh, BTW Brenda, I have an aromatherapy certification and I CHOOSE Young Living. I used other cheaper oils before YL, and they were just that, cheap….cheap quality.
Kacy
Do you people not read? The author clearly stated the monthly purchase as Essential rewards is NOT mandatory. And before you state someone is bitter about something because you choose a certain brand, that is all you have, your choice! Prove that a certain brand is better than the other with quantifiable proof, not just words. There have been tests done on YL proving adulteration, here’s one: https://adulteratedoils.wordpress.com/2016/04/30/adulterated-cinnamon-young-living-essential-oils-proof/. I also tested Thieves by the commonly agreed home test (put a drop on paper, if it’s gone in a few hours, depends on oil, then it’s pure; if it leaves oily residue, then it is not, meaning it could simply be a carrier oil which would be ok if it was on the label and not say 100% pure EO, or it could be a synthetic compound). I found Thieves to leaves a huge mark. Others did not, like peppermint, lemon. If you further read Brenda’s comment, whether she is old or not has no bearing, she mention she is an aromatherapist, probably with some knowledge, and her rant (opinion) is solely regarding the aggressive marketing, which i found to be true. Now to end my rant, before you simply bash someone for their opinion try doing some research instead of using your opinion as proof. Everyone has an opinion on everything and no one deserves to be “keyboard yelled at” for it. And one you say yo would like to see proof, how about you reach it yourself, it is pretty easy, or the only site on your computer is YL? And just before you decide my opinion is not yours and “keyboard yell” at me too, I am a YL member but after some research I decided I will purchase oils from somewhere else from now on. Except their household cleaner, that is amazing.
Jay
Kacy, which company do you now use for oils? I’d love to check it out.
Cindy
which company DO YOU prefer??? Thanks.
Cindy
Brenda, which company DO YOU recommend?? Thanks!
Beverly Smith
Tell us who are the real experts. I’m trying to figure all this out
Crystal
My husband has aching feet and can’t feel his feet! Which one is best for him?
Evelyn
Same here. I see this comment was made a year ago with no reply.
Ella
I am as caught up in the trap of Young living not on the up and up was bullied by the group I was in nothing done by the uine members have tape recording of claims not allowed would live to know who to turn them over to that group needs shut down completely. Young living didn’t care would not let me out of that group therefore I quit ordering there products. They scam people and there essential rewards program is also a scam must order 50.00 dollars a month then won’t let you use your points for at least 4 months and has to be separated order so they can charge separate shipping a pound package Cost 9 dollars shipping then there charged with using endangered plants illegally. Not good bullying elderly by the group and young living going along with it bad company policy against elderly. Yes I’m bitter bad experience with the group I was in. Shame on young living for not allowing me to be removed from that group even told me to quit ordering for 6 months so I quit not going back found good quality ouls elsewhere will stick with them young living list lots of money through my orders 300 a month there loss
Angela
Ella that sounds terrible!! I am so sorry that was your experience!! Putting yourself out there and spending your and money and not getting back from the group what you believe and should have received.
I am must say though for myself as fellow YL member (over 2years now) I have had a totally different experience. I wish that was the same for you. The group I have been involved with threw FB. Has been MORE THAN HELPFUL and educational!!! If anything there is already video, post, or a blog written about any question I could possibly have and if and when I have asked anyone is happy to point me in the direction of where it is located.
Now obviously not all groups are created equal which is unfortunate bc some are more helpful than others but I encourage if for any reason there is no support reach out to another YL person because trust me when I say if and when we are open for a lifestyle change for the better and we are surrounding ourselves these people much like the YL culture I would SURPRISED and SHOCKED if someone did not give the time of day to help aand support any other human beginning.
Doesn’t matter about teams or other who is where. We are trying to live our best life and if someone reaches out asking for support I can not imagine someone in our honest living statement to turn other away.
With that said I CHOOSE to do Essential Rewards I get like 4 to 5 FREE PROMO items from YL for spending 300 a month to REPLACE items I was going to ALREADY replace and the promo items are top items exclusive top new items you can ONLY GET IF YOUR ON ESSENTIAL REWARDS. I was not on for a year and a half and missed out and I saw the amazing things and wanted in.
They now have YL GO which is like amazon prime shipping and there is FREE shipping with one payment a year. There are two choices of packages. Like it’s amazing!! And like ANY COMPANY they change and grow and they have people who can spoil the pot. And I am sorry your soup was spoiled.
I wish you the best on this beautiful journey everyone should feel their best inside and out and treated with respect and love. I hope where you are today that is what you are feeling and are being treated ❤️❤️
