The throat chakra is the 5th chakra and can be balanced using specific essential oils.
It represents communication and specific parts of our body, including the mouth, jaws, tongue, shoulders, neck and thyroid. It is through this chakra that we verbally communicate and speak our truth to others in the world.
Through the 5th chakra we ask for what we want, need and desire. The throat chakra gives us the tool to communicate our dreams, to express energy within us and create movement in our lives.

When you don’t speak your truth, you create dishonesty within yourself and in your surroundings, and that doesn’t feel very good. In fact, ignoring your inner voice and not speaking your truth damages your self-esteem.
The 5th chakra is considered by experts as an important point of alignment for the whole body. It is through this chakra that we use the power of language to express ourselves. Through that expression, we can have an incredible impact on ourselves and others for better or for worse.
In Don Miguel Ruiz’s popular book, The Four Agreements, he explains that the first and most important agreement is to be impeccable with your word. Impeccable, meaning to speak in truth, mindfully and with good intent. For when we speak mindlessly, we can wreak havoc on our internal alignment and on others.
So: Let me show you how to maintain your integrity and keep your spirit thriving by balancing your throat chakra with essential oils!
Understanding the Throat Chakra
The throat chakra, also known as the fifth chakra, is one of the seven energy centers in the body.
Located in the neck region, it plays a crucial role in facilitating clear and effective communication, self-expression, and personal truth.
This energy center is associated with the thyroid gland, teeth, gums, jaw, hearing, and nasal passages.
When the throat chakra is balanced, it enables us to express ourselves authentically, listen actively, and connect with others on a deeper level.
A well-aligned throat chakra supports clear communication and helps us articulate our thoughts and feelings with confidence and integrity.
Throat Chakra Imbalances and Blocks
Sometimes (and perhaps too often), we are caught in situations where we find ourselves unable to say what’s on our mind.
Authentic expression does not come easily. There is a delicate dance between saying what you mean and staying tactful or diplomatic. Often, it’s easier to say what the other person may want to hear instead of speaking your truth. Fear of not being accepted, or judgement from others, may hinder your truthful verbal expression.
Having said that, Dr. David Simon, author of The Wisdom of Healing: A Natural Mind Body Program for Optimal Wellness, recommends three gateways to speaking your truth without undermining your personal integrity and those of others. These gateways are through three questions you may ask yourself before you speak:
- Is what I’m about to say true?
- Is what I’m about to say necessary?
- Is what I’m about to say kind (considerate and generous)?
The words you choose and how you choose to use them in your day to day life have a tremendous impact. Clear communication nurtures self-esteem, confidence, and a sense of strength.
Words and the energy you put behind them can make people feel loved, heard, and connected; or they can make people feel frightened, discouraged and disconnected. Never underestimate the power of the voice within you.
When your chakra system is in alignment, speaking your truth should not be an issue. In moments of strength throughout your chakra system, you feel confident, courageous and aligned in awareness. When you are not aligned, you are not living in the truth of who you are or accessing your full potential to contribute to the world around you.
That’s when I hope you reach for your essential oils to help you get back in balance.
Causes of Throat Chakra Imbalances
Throat chakra imbalances can arise from various factors, including emotional suppression or repression, fear of public speaking or self-expression, and difficulty articulating thoughts and feelings.
Engaging in gossip or speaking negatively about others can also disrupt the energy flow in this chakra. Dishonesty or a lack of integrity in communication further contributes to imbalances.
Physical issues such as a sore throat, laryngitis, or thyroid problems, as well as environmental factors like pollution, smoking, or excessive noise, can also impact the throat chakra.
These imbalances can manifest as physical, emotional, or mental blockages, hindering our ability to communicate effectively and express ourselves truthfully.
If you suspect your throat chakra is closed or imbalanced, look for the following symptoms²:
- Chronic ailments such as sore throat, bad breath, dental issues, hoarseness
- Thyroid problems. If you have pent up anger or frustrations due to not standing up for yourself, you are more susceptible to issues with the thyroid.
- Neck pain
- Fear of speaking and inability to express thoughts
- Shyness and inconsistency in speech and actions
- Social anxiety
- Inhibited creativity
- Stubbornness
- Detachment
Balancing the Throat Chakra with Essential Oils
Essential oils are like magical little potions from earth created from herbs, trees, plants and flowers. Using essential oils instantly connects us to nature. And when we connect to nature, we connect and realign ourselves.
Applying essential oils in a clockwise direction can enhance their effectiveness, especially when focusing on energy centers like the Throat Chakra.
The 5 most popular essential oils to balance the throat chakra include:
1. Peppermint
Peppermint essential oil is a cleansing and clearing essential oil. When diffused into the air, it can instantly open our airways. It is powerful and stimulating, so use with care and avoid around dogs.
- Diffuse one to two drops in your favorite diffuser and inhale while speaking mantras that support you. (see mantras/affirmation for the throat chakra below)
- Add to your favorite carrier oil and rub on the back of your neck and bottoms of your feet.
- Add to a cool or warm bath to help you relax.
- Add to a compress and place over your head.
2. Bergamot
Bergamot essential oil is one of my favorite essential oils to help balance the throat chakra. Personally, it uplifts me and helps me to connect with myself when my spirits feel low.
It is described on www.planttherapy.com as citrus-y and fruity with a warm, spicy, floral quality. You can use bergamot essential oil in many of the ways described above and you can find it in various recipes and products. For an easy start, check out my Bergamot diffuser blend recipes HERE.

Geranium essential oil can help with respiratory support and breathing, lowering of stress levels, and balancing blood pressure.
Additionally, it may help treat bad breath and tooth decay. Use geranium essential oil with coconut oil in a technique called oil pulling to treat your teeth with essential oils.

Carrot seed essential oil is a gentle and grounding oil. It is linked to detoxification and renewal, which mirrors the throat chakra’s need for cleansing from negative thoughts, suppressed emotions, or unspoken truths.
