A Brief Company History
The company Mountain Rose Herbs boast an impressive array of certifications, awards and “People and Planet before Profit” company ethics.
Back in 1987, Rosemary Gladstar was teaching a class at the California School of Herbal Studies and started a small herbal business providing only class supplies for her students. In 1991, she sold her small business to Julie Bailey, a friend, teaching herbalist also, avid gardener and wilderness guide.
Julie’s passion for creating an ethical herbal business with friendly service and high quality goods only continued to grow throughout the 1990’s.
When Shawn Donnille was promoted to management in 1999, revolutionary change started happening, including the establishing of a “strictly organic” policy for all Mountain Rose Herbs products made, and acquiring organic certification for the company. Shawn and Julie became co-owners of Mountain Rose Herbs 2001.

Single Essential Oils
Mountain Rose Herbs carries over 135 single essential oils in stock.
If you browse the Mountain Rose Herb website, you can find a detailed description of each essential oil, including a listing of which parts of the natural flower or herb was used, and what extraction method was applied to create the oil. For the aromatherapists among us, it also tells you the aromatherapy note classification (whether it’s a base note, middle note or top note), which comes in handy if you plan to blend your own essential oils together.
While other essential oil companies may offer both organic and conventional essential oil varieties, “organic” remains Mountain Rose Herb’s first and only choice. This really shows how their passion for organic is woven into each and every thing that Mountain Rose Herbs does. It is therefore no surprise that Mountain Rose Herbs essential oils is a market leader and offers one of the most thorough selections of certified organic herbs, spices, and botanical products available today.

General Use of Mountain Rose Herbs
As with all essential oils, please never use them in an undiluted way. Always mix a few drops of the essential oil of your choice with a carrier oil or other base such as an unscented body lotion. After you have properly diluted the oil in a carrier of your choice, always perform a small patch test to a more insensitive part of your skin before going full-on and applying to your skin everywhere. Do not take essential oils internally unless you’re working with a qualified and expert practitioner. Always keep essential oils away from children.

I love using MT Rose – my go-to… but I have a question I’m hoping someone can answer. Unlike do-terra who touts their oils can be taken internally, Mt Rose always labels their products “not for internal use” – why is this? Is it a liability thing or should I truly never use them in foods or potions.
Diane
Diana, I’ve been wondering the same thing. I have been taking a drop or 2 of peppermint in my water. Now debating if I should not be doing this and buy from a company that allows their oils to be taken internally. But I LOVE Mt Rose oils. Please advise! thanks!

I live in Eugene where the company is based. At their on site location, the sales ladies mentioned it is a liability issue but you may still take it internally if you want. They sell books on the topic in their store.

I’ve been a long time customer of Mountain Rose Herbs and can honestly say that this company ranks first with my collection of beautiful products. The prices are great and my whole experience has always been first rate. Fresh oils are always what we consumers are looking for, and MRH delivers it at attractive prices. I use them daily, and my house has always had a great smell…upstairs where the bedrooms are is where I put the lavender oils, so we sleep well. Downstairs has other great fragrances such as gardenia, jasmine, orange and ylang ylang, to name just a few. My oil case carries the best possible oils that make our life better. Buy the best and leave the rest!

I love Mountain Rose! I too wondered where they got their plants so I went looking! https://www.mountainroseherbs.com/policies/quality-control/sourcing
I think this answers it and is from their website!!!

Thank you Lydia, I appreciate you posting the link to that page. I am really sorry the previous two comments got missed through the moderation queue; I will work on updating this article and address these questions. I agree Mountain Rose is a fantastic company.

I’ve been using MRH for a good year now and really like them. They do offer some non-organic oils (for example, tangerine). Perhaps only when they’re not able to source organic?

I’ve been back and forth with so many EO companies. A few of which I have found outright dishonest and shady and it makes me wonder how people can stand by those products. I stumbled upon This company while watching a review for another EO company. I love how Mountain Rose Herbs sounds and looks. I’m impressed they are USDA approved and not MLM. I’m with Jen though, where do they get their plants?
Thank you!
Jen
I think this company sounds really great, and I love the array of oils they offer. The organic certified aspect is excellent. My only question is, how do they source their oils? It does not appear that they grow their own plants. This review doesn’t really talk about that, and I could not find that information anywhere on their website.

Hi TG, I’m sorry that the links to the Mountain Rose Herbs website were temporarily unavailable. I have checked them all today and they are all up and running again. Thanks for contacting me and have fun learning about Mountain Rose Herbs.

I have a small bottle of Lavender from Young Living and I really love it, however, I don’t love the price. How does the smell of the Lavender compare to brands like Rose Mountain Herbs? Some of the other less expensive brands smell really different, not quite right. Do you have any insight or advise for me? Thanks!
Shelby
I personally own a 1 oz. bottle of MRH (Mountain Rose Herbs) Lavender Essential Oil (Lavandula angustifolia) and absolutely love it! The smell is just as gorgeous as the “spendier” versions I have used with Aura Cacia and doTERRA, and, might I dare say, a deeper lavender note that stays longer when I use it on my skin with coconut oil. I personally chose MRH because of two reasons. 1, they are local to me which makes me feel so much better supporting local companies, and 2, I have yet to find an EO (Essential Oil) that has not delivered the promise of purity and quality. I have their nebulizer as well and just love love love that I do not need to dilute the EO and even if it were to run out of EO that it would not damage the nebulizer or “burn” any of the last drops of EO. Been extraordinarily happy with MRH and I have only just tapped the surface (their Essential Oils and the nebulizer) of what they offer!
