Do you spend a lot of time in your car? Maybe you commute for work, or maybe you have a summer road trip planned?
Using essential oils in your car not only provides a pleasant aroma, it can also help to create a calming atmosphere, or help to keep you alert in traffic.
The way I incorporate aromatherapy into my driving is mostly aimed at relaxation and making the car smell fresh.

So, here are my best tips on how to use essential oils in the car.
1. Use a Vent Clip Diffuser
The simplest and easiest way to get the smell of essential oils into your car, is with a vent clip diffuser.
These small devices clip onto your car’s air vent and use the airflow to disperse the aroma.
All you do is add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the pad inside the diffuser.
- NOTE: The June recipe box from Simply Earth includes this nifty little car vent diffuser.
- The cheap/DIY version of this is aroma sticks, AKA: clothespins. They don’t look as fancy but they’re basically free. Add a few drops of essential oil directly onto a wooden clothespin, and clip it onto your air vent. The air circulation will help disperse the aroma.
2. Make a DIY Air Freshener
Create a homemade air freshener with a DIY key chain kit or simply using felt and essential oils. Cut the felt into your desired shape, add a few drops of essential oil, and hang it from your rearview mirror.
3. Wear Diffuser Jewelry
Wear a diffusing bracelet or necklace while driving is a simple and personalized way to bring essential oils with you.
Jewelry pieces often have absorbent materials like lava stones or felt pads that you apply essential oils to. Add 1-2 drops before your drive, and you’ll be set!
4. Cotton Ball or Tissue Method
Simply put a few drops of essential oil on a cotton ball or tissue and place it in a strategic location in your car, such as in a cup holder or near an air vent.
5. Use a Spray Bottle
For immediate scenting power, keep a DIY car freshener spray handy. You will have to make this ahead of time, but once you have it in your glove box, it’ll come in handy many times over!
To make it, mix a few drops of essential oil with water in a small spray bottle. Shake the bottle before each use to ensure the oils are well-dispersed.
Lightly mist the interior of your car, avoiding direct contact with surfaces such as leather seats or the dashboard.
When essential oils are mixed with water, the longevity of your DIY can vary depending on several factors, such as the type of essential oil, the container used, and storage conditions.
To help extend the shelf life of your DIY:
- Use a dark glass container (like amber or cobalt blue) to protect the essential oils from light.
- Store the mixture in a cool, dark place and avoid exposure to direct sunlight (the glove box is a perfect place for this).
- Add a natural preservative like witch hazel or a small amount of vodka to help extend the mixture’s shelf life.
EO Safety Tips
Essential oil safety in diffusing is crucial because improper use can lead to respiratory irritation, headaches, or allergic reactions. It’s super important to ensure proper ventilation and using recommended amounts only. I want you to enjoy the benefits, without any possible side effects.
- Use Sparingly: Essential oils are potent, so only use a few drops to avoid overwhelming scents.
- Ventilation: Ensure your car is well-ventilated, especially when using stronger oils like peppermint or eucalyptus.
- Allergies and Sensitivities: Be mindful of any allergies or sensitivities, particularly if you have passengers.
- Avoid Direct Sunlight: Essential oils can degrade in direct sunlight, so store them in a cool, dark place when not in use.
