Benefits of a DIY Face Oil
Imagine a skincare routine where every ingredient is tailored to nourish, rejuvenate, and protect your skin without the mystery of hidden chemicals.
With a DIY face oil, you can really harness the potential of natural ingredients to transform your skin.
Face oils are nature’s way of delivering deep hydration, vitamins, and antioxidants directly to your skin.
As an aromatherapist in training (with over a decade of experience using essential oils), I love guiding others to discover the benefits of personalized skincare. With a few simple ingredients, you can create a luxurious, custom face oil that feels amazing, fits your skin type, and is gentle enough for daily use.
DIY Face Oil Recipe
In my recipe, I have combined nourishing carrier oils and therapeutic essential oils to give your skin the glow it deserves.
With this recipe, you’ll have a custom blend of nutrients and essential oils, perfect for giving your skin a radiant, healthy boost.
If you have special skin concerns such as acne, rosacea, or age spots, I would vary the essential oils used (not the carrier oil base).
Ingredients
- 2 oz amber glass bottle
- 1 tbsp Jojoba oil
- 1 tbsp Argan oil
- 1 tbsp Pomegranate oil
- 4 drops Lavender essential oil
- 3 drops Frankincense essential oil
- 2 drop Tea tree essential oil
Instructions
- Prepare your bottle: Use a clean, dry dark amber glass bottle, ideally with a dropper for easy application.
- Combine carrier oils: Pour the jojoba, argan, and pomegranate oils into the bottle, filling it about three-quarters full.
- Add essential oils: Add the Lavender, Frankincense, and Tea tree essential oils.
- Mix gently: Cap the bottle and gently shake it to blend the oils thoroughly.
- Storage: Keep your face oil in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight to extend its shelf life.
How to Use
After your regular face cleansing routine, place a few drops of the oil onto your fingertips and gently press it into your skin, focusing on areas that need extra hydration. For best results, use daily, both morning and night, to enjoy that natural glow!
How to Customize Your Face Oil
One of the best parts about making your own face oil is the flexibility to adapt it to your unique skin type!
Here’s how to choose the right oils for your skin’s needs and create a blend that works perfectly for you:
Oily or Acne-Prone Skin
- Base Oils: Look for lightweight, balancing oils that don’t clog pores. Jojoba oil is a great choice because it closely resembles skin’s natural sebum and helps regulate oil production. Grapeseed oil is also fantastic, since it’s lightweight, quickly absorbed, and high in antioxidants.
- Essential Oils: Tea tree and Lavender essential oils are great for acne-prone skin, with antibacterial and calming effects that can help reduce breakouts and redness.
Dry Skin
- Base Oils: Opt for deeply moisturizing, nutrient-rich oils. Avocado oil is excellent for its high fatty acid content, while Sweet Almond oil provides long-lasting hydration.
- Essential Oils: Add Rose or Geranium essential oil, which are known for their hydrating and soothing properties, helping to lock in moisture and soften dry skin.
Sensitive Skin
- Base Oils: Gentle, soothing oils like Shea butter oil or Argan oil are ideal as they nourish without causing irritation.
- Essential Oils: Stick to mild, calming essential oils like chamomile and Lavender, which help reduce redness and inflammation.
Mature or Aging Skin
- Base Oils: Choose regenerative, firming oils like Rosehip oil and Pomegranate seed oil. They are rich in vitamins and antioxidants that support skin renewal.
- Essential Oils: Try adding Frankincense and Myrrh essential oils, both prized for their anti-aging properties, to help minimize fine lines and improve elasticity.
By selecting oils suited to your skin type, you’ll create a customized face oil that gives you the perfect balance of hydration, nourishment, and skin protection.
Quick Solutions
If you’re looking to start with a ready-made facial oil, I can recommend Plant Therapy’s “Younger Glo” facial oil.
Formulated with sunflower, sesame, camellia, rosehip, and argan oils—plus Vitamin E—this revitalizing oil brightens, evens skin tone, and helps reduce the look of fine lines.
Use it as-is, or spike it with essential oils of choice (the ones I have in my recipe above would be a great place to start). Or, I also love using Plant Therapy’s Anti Age blend.
Final Thoughts
Even if you have oily skin, don’t be afraid of using a facial oil. Natural carrier oils and essential oils can support your complexion and help restore a vibrant, glowing look.
I personally love using my face oils (and body oils too), and I recommend them to anyone. At least give them a try, and see for yourself what the magic is all about!
