Essential oil roller bottles are one of the safest and easiest ways to apply essential oils. They contain a blend of essential oils and carrier oil, making them safe to put directly onto your skin.
You can buy a wide variety of roll-ons for special purposes.
But today, I want to show you how to make your own roller bottles.

What You’ll Need
Roll-on bottles are very easy to make. They are perfect for applying essential oils. All you need to do is add the essential oil drops into the empty roller, then fill the roll-on bottle with a carrier oil.
Essential Oils
I recommend you get Plant Therapy’s popular 7 & 7 Starter Kit for $64.99, which includes:
- 7 single essential oils: Lemon, Lavender, Peppermint, Tea tree, Eucalyptus Globulus, Cinnamon Cassia, Sweet Orange
- 7 synergy blends: Relax, Energy, Tranquil, Sensual, Invigor Aid, Germ Fighter, and Immune Aid
These are very versatile oils that I believe will serve you well.
You can, of course, also use whatever you have on hand at home.
Carrier Oil
Each roll-on typically takes right around 10 ml of carrier oil (sometimes slightly less to leave a bit of room for the essential oils).
Fractionated Coconut Oil works great, Sweet Almond is also nice or Jojoba for that extra skin-soothing effect. You can also mix carrier oils to your liking, and make a carrier oil blend that suits your skin (or if you have some carrier oils at home that you’d simply like to use up).
Roller Bottles
You’ll need a cute 12-pack of roll on bottles (I’ve used this set here with the pretty golden caps).
Roller bottles are easy to find on the internet. They come in different sizes, styles and capacities. Roll on essential oil roller bottles are available in both standard 10 ml, or specialty sizes such as 30 ml. By far the most commonly used size is 10 ml.
One thing to be aware of is that the quality difference is in the roller ball. Some roller bottles come with plastic roller balls, made of a durable and strong plastic. But some come with a stainless steel ball.
The plastic ball is a bit more difficult to roll. The stainless steel balls are much easier to roll, and also preferred in terms of cleanliness and quality of use. The only advantage of the plastic is that they’re usually a bit cheaper to buy.
Labels
With many DIY containers looking the same, it is smart to label your rollers.
If you don’t have a printer, or don’t want to get ready-made labels, I have this awesome label maker that I can recommend. It is handy for making single recipe batches, or when re-using your bottles or containers with a new recipe. I use it at home as needed, whenever I need a label on demand.
Favorite Roller Bottle Recipes
Essential oil rollers are great! They are easy to apply and they are safely pre-diluted so they don’t irritate your skin. All of these recipes are calculated at a safe dilution rate for healthy adults. If you have a home with children, pets, or elderly, there are a few special considerations.
One of the simplest methods to enjoy the advantages of your essential oils is by using a roller bottle. Before you get started creating your own rollerball blends, decide what you would like your essential oil blend to do, and pay special attention to the needs of your family: will this be for kids? Do you have pets around that may try to lick your hands, wrists, or areas close or around your face? If so, make sure you blend only with child safe or pet safe oils. Do a little investigating to figure out if the oil you’re considering comes with any special precautions or warnings.

- Shake the roller for at least 10 seconds when you first make it. Shake it again before every use.
- These roller bottles are very efficient, but you need to keep them away from light and heat. Don’t store them near any window.
- If you are going to be on the go with your essential oils, a hard cover roller bottle case can be a worth while investment.
Precautions
- Children. Aromatherapy isn’t generally recommended for children under 2 years of age unless done very carefully, or better yet, under the guidance of a Certified Aromatherapist. With kids, using high dilution rates is a must. This means, using a lot of carrier oils to only a small bit of essential oils. Here’s a handy guide to age appropriate aromatherapy at home.
- Cats. Cats have stronger senses than humans and their nose is way more sensitive than ours, so it’s definitely possible that scents you might find calming and wonderful, can be extremely strong and overwhelming for your cat. If you have a domestic pet cat, check this guide on which oils are toxic (and which ones are safe).
- Dogs. If you’re using aromatherapy around your dog, make sure to not apply your roller bottle in places that your pet would lick. Start here to learn about which oils are safe for dogs and which ones are not.
- Elderly. If you are elderly, or have sensitive skin, stay on the conservative side for dilution rates. Please refer to this guide to dilution rates to find more about the quantities of carrier oils compared to essential oils you’ll want to use.
- Medication or Pre-existing Conditions. If you’re currently on medications for any health issue, or have a chronic illness, please consult with your doctor, medical staff, or Certified Aromatherapist in regards to the use of essential oils.
