Understanding the Basics
I’ve been using hair oil for quite some time now. I love how it supports the dry, brittle ends of my long hair.
People use hair oil for a variety of reasons. For example: for scalp health, hair growth, hair strength and elasticity, frizz control, to add moisture or protect from heat.
Essential oils in hair care
When used in appropriate dilutions, essential oils offer natural solutions for various hair care concerns, promoting overall hair health and vitality.
- They can promote hair growth by stimulating blood circulation to the scalp, encouraging stronger and healthier hair follicles.
- Essential oils like Lavender and Tea Tree have antimicrobial properties that maintain scalp health, reducing issues like dandruff and soothing irritation.
- Balancing oil production on the scalp is facilitated by oils such as Ylang-Ylang and Cedarwood, contributing to softer and more manageable hair.
- Essential oils like Lemon and Clary Sage act as natural astringents, removing buildup and enhancing hair’s natural shine.
- Certain oils like Cedarwood and Thyme may help prevent hair loss by inhibiting the production of DHT, a hormone associated with hair shedding.
Carrier oils for moisturizing properties
Argan and almond oils are rich in fatty acids and vitamins, making them excellent moisturizers for hair. These oils create a protective barrier that seals in moisture, which prevents dryness and dehydration.
Additionally, their molecular structure allows them to penetrate the hair shaft, delivering essential nutrients deep into the hair strands.
By nourishing and hydrating the hair from within, Argan and almond oils help improve elasticity, reduce breakage, and promote overall hair health. Further, their soothing properties soothe the scalp environment, helping with things like scalp dryness and itchy irritation.
DIY Hair Oil Blend Recipe
Now, onto the recipe!
I’m sure you’ll agree that this is incredibly easy to make. You need just 4 ingredients (plus a bottle), and minimal preparation time.
It’s a quick and effective way to nourish and care for your hair without adding extra stress to your routine.
Ingredients
- 4 oz empty squeeze bottle
- 2 oz Argan carrier oil
- 2 oz Almond carrier oil
- 8 drops Head Soothing essential oil blend (from Simply Earth)
- 4 drops Ylang Ylang essential oil (from Simply Earth)
How to Blend your Recipe
- Prepare a clean, dry bottle for storing your hair oil blend. Make sure it has a tight-fitting lid to prevent leakage and to maintain the freshness of the oils.
- Measure out 2 tablespoons of Argan oil using a measuring spoon and pour it into the bottle.
- Add 2 tablespoons of Almond oil.
- Add 8 drops of Head Soothing essential oil blend from Simply Earth. You can use a dropper to carefully dispense the essential oil drops.
- Next, add 4 drops of Ylang Ylang essential oil to the mixture in the bottle. Again, use a dropper to control the amount of essential oil you add.
- Once all the ingredients are in the bottle, securely close the lid and shake the bottle gently to mix the oils together. This will ensure that the essential oils are evenly distributed throughout the carrier oils.
- Your diy hair oil blend is now ready to use! Before each use, give the bottle a gentle shake to remix the oils.
To apply the hair oil, start by massaging a small amount into your scalp using your fingertips. Then, work the oil down to the ends of your hair strands, focusing on areas that may be dry or damaged.
Leave the oil in your hair for at least 30 minutes to allow it to penetrate and nourish your hair and scalp. For deeper conditioning, you can leave the oil on overnight and wash it out in the morning. I usually apply the oil before bedtime or during a relaxing evening to maximize the self-care benefits of this little routine.
When you’re ready, wash your hair as usual with a gentle shampoo and conditioner to remove any excess oil residue.
Why Use Hair Oil?
People use hair oil to nourish, condition, and maintain the health of their hair and scalp.
The calming aroma of a natural, essential oils based treatment can also provide a moment of relaxation amidst a hectic day.
Here are more benefits of hair oil:
- Moisturization: Hair oil helps to moisturize and hydrate dry, brittle hair, especially the ends which are prone to damage. It seals in moisture, preventing dehydration and keeping hair soft and supple.
- Scalp Health: Massaging hair oil into the scalp can improve circulation, soothe irritation, and reduce dandruff. Certain oils have antimicrobial properties that help maintain a clean and healthy scalp environment.
- Hair Growth: Some oils, like coconut oil and castor oil, are believed to promote hair growth by stimulating hair follicles and nourishing the scalp. Regular application may encourage thicker and longer hair growth over time.
- Hair Strength and Elasticity: Hair oil can strengthen hair strands, reduce breakage, and improve elasticity, making hair more resistant to damage from styling, heat, and environmental factors.
- Frizz Control: Applying a small amount of hair oil to dry or frizzy hair can help tame flyaways, reduce frizz, and add shine, resulting in smoother and more manageable hair.
- Heat Protection: Certain oils, such as argan oil and grapeseed oil, can provide a barrier against heat damage from styling tools like blow dryers and straighteners, helping to minimize the risk of breakage and split ends.
Using hair oil can contribute to healthier, more vibrant hair, promoting both its appearance and its resilience to daily wear and tear.
Plus, making your own hair oil allows you to customize it to your preferences and saves money compared to store-bought alternatives. Even though, I have to say I also enjoy some fantastic store-bought hair products. For example, this beautiful Strengthen & Grow hair serum from Plant Therapy:
