Below is my list of the very best portable essential oil diffusers with links to their full reviews and arranged by overall rating.
Portable Diffuser Buying Tips
As you shop for a portable essential oil diffuser, keep in mind that these units will generally have a lesser overall run-time due to their smaller size.
While you can diffuse essential oils for up to 6-8 hours with these regular diffusers, most of the portable models max out at something like 2-3 hours. Which, considering how little they are in size, is still a pretty good output!
If you consider ordering a portable diffuser, please ensure you read the fine print of what is all included in the box. Some models ship with an AC adapter, some ship without! However, you can power most models off your basic iPhone USB/wall charger or any other fitting appliance AC adapter you may have kicking around. Just check first please so that you don’t get disappointed when the package arrives in the mail.

Why Use An Aromatherapy Diffuser?
For good reason, aromatherapy is now popular in many homes. Although it has been defined in various ways, it is basically the process of diffusing scents into the air to make people feel better. Essential oils provide a wonderful natural way of promoting feelings of well-being.
An essential oil diffuser releases essential oils together with moisture to a particular space. With that, it may also be a good option if you need additional moisture while you sleep, since it also works as a humidifier. Excellent quality essential oil diffusers do not use heat to operate; hence they keep the oil in its normal state that produces therapeutic qualities. Heat alters an essential oils’ properties so it is recommended to use these cold-mist aromatherapy diffusers for best results. Using portable essential oil diffusers, the oils aren’t over-heated.
Using an essential oil diffuser is a really safe means to make your home smell good. The aromas can cleanse, detox, and purify the air in your home. You’ll also be happy to know that you can use essential oils for your house and set the appropriate ambiance for a relaxed evening.
Essential oils can also be used for seasonal support, to boost the immune system, or address emotional troubles such as stress or depression. In fact, aromatherapy is very effective when it comes to managing anxiety. If your intent is to diffuse essential oils for health purposes, using a diffuser is the preferred way to go for anyone. It adds a subtle layer of all-around wellness to your home that is hard to beat.
Just as a diffuser with specific oils can help you to de-stress, you can also use oils to make an energizing mood.
If you’re interested in the most effective essential oil diffusers, your intention is probably to enhance your wellness, and possibly your sleep. Based on the oil used, a diffuser can do all that, PLUS work as a natural and affordable air purifier.

Hey,
Thanks for this article.
I am looking for a pretty looking diffusers that is cordless or battery operated to put on a shelf. I do not have a cord outlet where it needs to go and I have been searching everywhere and haven’t found anything.
Thank you so much
Judit
I went to a doTERRA presentation today. I was interested, but also a bit suspicious. Fortunately I did some research before signing up.
I’m so glad I found your site. Thanks for the well researched comprehensive articles. I found answers to most of my questions, and ordered my first oils from Plant Therapy.
I will keep you posted of the results.
Emma Carter
Great to hear Judit, thank you for your comment!

Angela Tidball
Hi I’m looking for a battery operated diffuser because of cords and kids….the link you put on the last comment didn’t work. Please could you help further.
Many thanks
Diane
I’m looking for a diffuser that will operate on batteries because I don’t want a cord hanging down. But the ones shown on your site are all small and/or portable. Do you know of one that will be adequate for a fairly large room, but also be battery powered?
thanks!!
Emma
Hi Diane, excellent question! Try this model here. I haven’t personally tested it but it says it’s 100ml in size, which is the same water tank size as many popular plug-in diffusers have. And it’s cordless as you wanted! Hope this helps :)

I have found a few reputable companies that list their sources and the quality of their oils. One is plant therapy. Also I use Eden’s garden and Florihana (which is distilled in France). By the way they are all very reasonably priced oils and none of them are MLM companies.
cheri
it’s hard to figure out what company to go with
I want someone I can trust
I read reviews and many times they are mixed
so still confused
everyone wants memberships and automatic shipments I just want to order only what I need
I just want oils with easy description of use and pure oils that work
Emma
Cheri, I understand your frustration. Try ordering on Amazon instead of brand’s direct websites. That way, you can really only buy what you need, you usually get great pricing and definitely no memberships or subscriptions required. I can recommend Rocky Mountain Oils on Amazon, or Anjou Essential Oils on Amazon.
Kathy
One thing that was not mentioned in the comparison is bottling of all thevoils, not just YL. How can a company control what goes in their bottles if they bought it to be rebottled. Many rebottled oils are from the same distillery. What about quality and lab purity comparison? To get the label “pure” it only needs to be 5%. This information is from my own research. Would you whole heartedly recommend swallowing an oil without knowing how it was processed and rebottled?
The comparison is good but missing important information. Thanks
Emma
Thanks so much for pointing this out Kathy, I’ll look into the bottling process some more and update the information to further help all of my blog readers in their essential oil learning and shopping!

I really like scented oils, but we don’t think that I need anything fancy to use it in. All I need is a plain ceramic tealight oil burner and some fantastic smelling aromatherapy oils.
Emma
Dear Lenna, thank you so much for commenting on my blog here, I really love hearing from my readers. However, on your note that a tealight burner will do the same, I must disagree. Heat alters some of the therapeutic properties of some essential oils, therefore negating the whole point of using oils. If you’re just looking for a nice smell – sure, go with a tealight burner. But if you’re actually looking to keep the integrity of the oil’s natural properties, and enjoy its benefits, heat can destroy that. That is why the electric diffusers all work on cold misting, to keep the oils intact. You can read more about this here: https://www.essentialoilhaven.com/how-to-use-essential-oils/.
Cheers,
Emma.
