This recipe uses essential oils to treat puffy eyes and dark circles under your eyes. It can help reduce under eye redness and adds natural nourishment.
Best of all, you can finish your nighttime routine right from your bed!
Best Essential Oils For Puffy Eyes
Before diving into the recipe, let me quickly highlight 3 of the best essential oils for puffy eyes:
1. Sandalwood
Sandalwood essential oil smoothes the skin. It can also reduce the appearance of scars and blemishes.
2. Frankincense
Frankincense combines well with Sandalwood. One of the handiest essential oils, Frankincense can give you the look of a full 8 hours’ sleep, even if you didn’t get that many Zzzzs. Frankincense is anti-inflammatory. This property helps with morning redness, puffiness and regenerating of cell growth. Frankincense has a mild to medium fruity spicy aroma that many appreciate.
3. Lemon
Finally, Lemon essential oil. Not only is it a fresh citrus scent, it can help lighten and add radiance to your under eye skin.
Make sure to use steam distilled Lemon as it is the most gentle for skin care applications and also doesn’t act photosensitive.
Why Switch to Natural Skin Care?
Many commercial creams and serums are leaden with chemical ingredients. This makes them harsh on sensitive skin.
When it comes to creams near your eyes, it’s smart to use extra caution. A natural, chemical free alternative is essential oils.
Not only are you benefiting your own skin, you are also helping reduce waste! The beauty industry uses too much non-compostable packaging.
This DIY eye cream is zero waste, reusable, and you are in full control of what your skin needs!
DIY Under Eye Serum Recipe
Ever since I’ve crafted this recipe, I have been using it on my own under eye circles. It is a delightful addition to my nightly skincare routine!
The recipe combines almond and argan oils with sandalwood, frankincense, and lemon essential oils.
This creates a blend that not only soothes the skin, but also enhances its appearance.
Here’s how to make it…
Ingredients
- 1 ounce Almond Oil
- 1 ounce Argan Oil
- 3 drops Sandalwood Essential Oil
- 10 drops Frankincense Essential Oil
- 3 drops Lemon Essential Oil (Steam Distilled)
How to Make Your Own Under Eye Lotion
- You can use either a 2-ounce glass dropper bottle or a 6 – 10 ml roller bottle.
- Combine all the ingredients in a glass / stainless steel bowl and mix so they blend evenly.
- Pour carefully or funnel your serum into bottle.
- After your regular cleansing routine, apply a few drops under your eyes.
- Dab and smooth serum with ring finger.
- Leave on as a night under eye mask.
- For the best results, use every night.
- Store in a cool area, like on your nightstand.
Why these Ingredients?
Almond and Argan oils are light and easy to apply, and they are excellent carrier oils.
Argan oil is rich with antioxidants, fatty acids and Vitamin E. It is safe to use around the eyes even with the most sensitive skin. Argan is best applied at night, so the properties can moisturize and soften any fine lines. Overnight application with also help with uninterrupted elasticity treatment of under eye skin.
Almond oil is the best for lightening dark under circles and puffiness. Almond oil also contains retinol, which increases collagen production. Many anti-aging creams and serums contain Retinol. Yet, often those same creams’ harsh ingredients can irritate the under eye.
If you need a thicker moisturizer, try Coconut oil or Shea butter.
As for the essential oils, this combination of Sandalwood, Frankincense and Lemon is my first choice to help you achieve glowing skin without any makeup!

When you cleanse your face in the morning, make sure to stroke away from your eyes in case there is leftover residue. Your skin should feel smoother and give off the fresh appearance like you got 8+ hours of sleep. So you can skip the concealer and let your natural skin glow!
Extra Tips
Everyone’s skin is different, so don’t be afraid to try and test a few times. If you have extra sensitive skin, use fewer drops of essential oils or a thicker carrier oil like coconut. They are soothing and help with under eyes water retention (3).
Precautions
Of course, use precaution with everything you place on your body. Always avoid contact with your eyes and if any irritation, stop usage.

Hi Emma,
Apologies if I’ve missed it, but what is the amount of almond oil needed for this puffy eye serum? It seems to be the only ingredient listed without a specific amount.
Is it the same as Argan oil? (1 ounce needed of almond oil and 1 ounce needed of Argan oil?)
Thanks so much
Emma Carter
Hi Jessica, no worries, thanks for your question! Yes, it is 1 oz Almond oil and 1 oz Argan oil.

I wasn’t able to get the Sandalwood essential oil. What can I use as a substitute?

Hi Chris. Sandalwood substitutions for skin care are Helichrysum, Chamomile, Galbanum, Myrrh or Frankincense.
