First and foremost though, let’s look at the origin, uses, and benefits of Blue Tansy. This will help us understand in which recipes this oil will work best.
Origin
Blue Tansy essential oil is produced from a flowering plant that originated in Morocco, Portugal, and Spain. The botanical name is Tanacetum annuum and belongs to the aster family ¹.
Its oil is steam-distilled from the plant leaves, buds, and flowers. During distillation, it releases a compelling blue color due to high chamazulene content.
In fact, ‘Azul’ is a Portuguese and Spanish word meaning ‘blue’. The bluish coloration is a connotation of its name ‘Blue Tansy Essential Oil’ and distinguishes it from common tansy oil, which is not blue.
Common Tansy
Another variety of tansy oil also exists. It is called Tanacetum vulgare and originated from Eurasia, meaning Europe and Asia. The word ‘vulgare’ is a Latin terminology meaning ‘common’. It is also known as golden buttons, bitter buttons, and common tansy.
This invasive plant is everywhere now. It has a strong reddish stem with yellowish button-like flowers. NOTE: Consuming the leaves and flowers of common tansy could be harmful to humans.
Some unethical essential oil sellers may adulterate the very expensive Blue Tansy oil with common tansy. Beware of a price point that’s too good to be true when shopping for your oils.
