What Will My Review Cover?
If you’re ready to learn more, let me quickly introduce you to my thought process. Every time I review an essential oils brand, I look at a lot of aspects about who the company is and what they do.
You can also look at these questions asking yourself, what should I care about when shopping at essential oil companies?
My brand review will help answer the following questions:
- Variety and Range: What types of essential oils does the company offer? Do they provide a wide variety of single oils as well as blends? Are there seasonal oils available?
- Product Quality: How pure are the essential oils? Has the company received any certifications regarding the quality and purity of their oils (such as GC/MS, USDA Organic, etc.)?
- Education: Does the company help customers learn about essential oils and how to use them effectively and safely?
- Packaging and Storage: How are the essential oils packaged to preserve their quality (dark glass bottles, etc.)? Are there proper labeling and instructions on each product?
- Customer Service and Reviews: What is the general sentiment among other customers regarding the company’s products and services?
- Shipping and Returns: Is there free shipping available? What is the company’s policy regarding returns and refunds?
- Promotions or Points: Does the company offer discounts or loyalty programs?
- Price and Value: How do the prices of the essential oils compare to other brands in the market?
A Brief Company History
Rocky Mountain Oils (RMO) is one of the older essential oil companies that you’ll see around today. The company was founded in 2004, and it is based out of Orem, Utah. It was founded by Michael and Phoenix, a then newlywed couple with a dream to create an essential oils company that would offer pure and safe products to use for the whole family.
RMO operates with an impressive array of quality testing and purity standards for their products. For example, they send their oils to an independent 3rd party quality/purity testing lab. Then, you can publicly look up the test results of the exact batch of essential oil bottles that you bought.
RMO’s vision is to create community. Customers are part of the family. It’s really a beautiful story, supported by the excellent quality oils that you can purchase.
For me, shopping at RMO just makes me feel good! So if you choose to give them a try, be warned. This brand could soon become the favorite in your oil cabinet!
Product Line-Up
Single Oils and Blends
RMO currently offers 77 single oils, 10 USDA certified organic oils, and 60 blends. This is a sizable selection that is fun to shop!
The blends offer help to a variety of health and well-being questions, for example: to improve mood, for sleep, for cleaning, energy, for your immune system, for skin care or pain relief.
Organic Essential Oils
Rocky Mountain Oils carry certified organic essential oils in their product line-up, and they are absolutely incredible! These oils are USDA certified organic oils, which means they can bear the trusted green “USDA Organic” logo.
With that, you know that the quality of farming practices of essential oil raw materials is being held to a higher standard, including a 3rd party test for pesticides in an independent lab. Pesticides are unfortunately a very common byproduct of modern day farming practices. RMO offers an organic oils FAQ here. This section answers your questions specifically about the organic oils by RMO.
Lucky for us, RMO’s organic quality essential oils are still quite approachable in price. The prices range from $13.95 for Orange, to $84.95 for the Frankincense. The popular Lavender essential oil is somewhere in the middle, around $25.95 for a 15 mL bottle.
Easy Starter Kits
No brand would be complete without offering an easy starter kit for beginners. It can be an overwhelming world of essential oils if you’re new.
RMO does a great job of offering starter kits that are useful, valuable, and can stock up your medicine cabinet all at once.
- The “Essentials Kit” includes 6 popular single oils: Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, Rosemary, Orange and Tea Tree.
- The “Everyday Blends” Kit includes 5 ml each of First Aid, Immune Strength, Citrus Blend, At Peace, Breathe Easy and Purify.
Roll-Ons
Essential oil roller bottles are super handy! You can conveniently transport them in your pocket, purse or backpack and enjoy restorative aromatherapy benefits on-the-go!
They are pre-diluted essential oils, and thus ready to use. You are able to simply open the bottle, and use the essential oil in the area needed.
Rocky Mountain Oils’ roller bottles are diluted at 5%, which is a good rate for safe and effective adult topical application.
The Daily Solutions Kit gets you ready for whatever your day may bring. This set includes 5 roll-on bottles at 10 ml size each.
Seasonal Essential Oils
Rocky Mountain Oils has some fabulous seasonal essential oil blends! Not only are they fun to shop for and delightful to diffuse… they also help us align with the natural rhythm of the seasons. Whether emotionally or therapeutically, seasonal blends capture the essence of the changing seasons and I LOVE THEM to pieces.
What I like best about these is their 5 ml bottle size. This is enough to get me through 1-2 months of seasonal use, but it’s not so much that there’s waste left over at the end of it. Essential oils do have a shelf life, and I try to do a good job of using up all of my precious oils before they expire.
If you’re interested in Pumpkin Spice Latte specifically, I have written a fun 3-way PSL blend product comparison HERE.
Accessories
Rocky Mountain Oils is a very reputable essential oil company that also offers relevant accessories that any EO enthusiast would love. They carry diffusers, carrier oils, and select DIY containers such as empty roll-on bottles. Think about this selection when compiling your shopping list. It’s super handy to be able to shop in one place!
The carrier oils I’ve used were all high quality, nice viscosity, and pleasant to dispense out of the bottle. Definitely recommend!
Natural Products
RMO offers a few essential oil infused natural products for home & beauty, such as a foaming hand soap and some nutritional supplements. It isn’t a large selection but that’s ok with me. I love a good, pure essential oils brand that focuses on their core offering.
Quality Assurance
As the essential oil market grows, a multitude of companies are available to choose from today. It can be a bit of a challenge to directly compare each brand to the next, especially if you have questions about oil testing, oil purity, and in general the quality of the product that you are getting.
Rocky Mountain Oils is committed to make products of the highest quality. All oils are and GC/MS verified as 100% pure essential oil. As part of this commitment, RMO provides GC/MS test results from an independent, verified third-party testing lab for all single oils.
GC/MS tests verify the quality and purity of the essential oils tested and sold to customers. As a consumer, this gives you confidence that you are using the highest quality oil available.
To prove this to you, you can download the GC/MS test results for your exact batch of essential oil, here. You will need to have your oil bottle ready as you’ll need the batch code number from the bottom of your bottle.
This is an amazing offer of transparency.
What is GC/MS Testing?
The “GC” part of GC/MS Testing stands for “Gas Chromatography”. GC is the process of analyzing volatile substances while they’re in the gas phase. During GC, the components of an oil sample are dissolved in a solvent and vaporized. The testing process then spits out key data about what compounds are found in the tested oils, and how much of each component is present.
The “MS” part of GC/MS Testing stands for “Mass Spectometry”. This process calculates a ratio of how much mass is present in the sample, vs. how much charge.
S.A.A.F.E. Promise™
Further to providing the independent test results, RMO also has a company-internal S.A.A.F.E. Promise™ for quality control. It stands for:
- S for Satisfaction: RMO offers you 100% guaranteed satisfaction for their products to always be pure and potent. They also provide excellent customer service along the way!
- A for Authentic: RMO buys their raw materials from top-tier trusted suppliers around the world, which are required to meet strict product quality guidelines. Bulk purchase batches are also extensively sample-tested before being accepted into further processing into RMO oils.
- A for Analysis: Rocky Mountain Essential Oils’ GC/MS testing is verified through an independent 3rd party lab.
- F for Free of Adulterants: RMO oils are guaranteed to be free of adulterants by conducting internal analysis, plus running the oils through the independently hired third party GC/MS Testing.
- E for Effective and Pure: Only oils that have tested PURE will be sold.
Oil Sourcing
After over 10 years of using, testing and evaluating essential oils, I’ve never came across a “bad smelling” oil from Rocky Mountain Oils. Their products continue to deliver value and quality beyond other brands.
In fact, RMO published an amazing article on their own blog, written by their Chief Operations Officer, who’d been working in their supply chain for two decades. She writes about how tricky the sourcing of quality oils can be, and how the company ensures the materials they use to produce their brand of product, is actually good and true.
In short, there are some quality control measures that aren’t often talked about, such as harvesting too early as demand for essential oil increases, or cutting out a few testing points here and there to save costs. If this peaked your interest at all, I think it’s best you read her words in full on your own.
Some (not all) oils by Rocky Mountain Oils are certified Fair Trade compliant. This means that some oils come from organically or wild grown plants, and therefore offer incredible quality.
Product Packaging
RMO essential oils ship in eco-chic brown cardboard boxes. On the inside of each box, you’ll find an inspirational statement or quote. This isn’t always the same quote, either, so it’s fun to open a new order every time!
As part of ensuring essential oils quality, the oil has to be stored properly. Rocky Mountain Oils uses dark brown amber glass bottles, which is best practice to keep the essential oils from unnecessary exposure to light.
Each oil is also properly labelled, including latin plant names, plus a list of ingredients if the oil is a blend.
Education
Rocky Mountain Oils provides educational resources on their website, including usage guides, safety information, and DIY recipes. Their blog “The Blend” includes everything from essential oil basics to diffuser blends and mind/body/spirit topics.
When shopping for essential oils, each product page includes instructions on how to use the oil, recipes, and FAQ’s.
I love it when a brand helps its customers learn how to use essential oils. That’s what my mission is, too. So in that respect, I feel this essential oils company is very much aligned to my values & thus, I can support spending my money there.
Can I Use Rocky Mountain Oils Internally?
Personally, I never recommend ingesting essential oils. We simply diffuse oils, or dilute them with carrier oils for topical application. Here are all the safe ways to use your oils.
Customer Service
For your shopping convenience, RMO offers a 24/7 online store on their website. You also have access to a 1-800 number, which is: 1 (866) 493-8159 and you can call if for general questions, customer service inquiries, or even if you need help placing your online order from Monday-Friday 6:00am-5:00pm MT. It’s really convenient!
Shipping is free in the US for orders over $49.95. For shopping carts under this amount, you pay $4.95. Priority rates and couriers such as FedEx, FedEx Overnight, and International Shipping are available.
Rocky Mountain Essential Oils offers a 90-day no hassle 100% money back guarantee – even if your oils are opened! If you are unhappy with your order for any reason, you can contact them and they will issue you a refund.
Price and Value
Rocky Mountain Oils aren’t the cheapest oils available. If you’re looking for a super cheap brand, look at Plant Therapy or Edens Garden (those are still good oils at lower price points).
However, I find that RMO oils are amazing quality and I can smell it in every bottle that I open!
They have a rewards program called Club Oil’ty where you can get 1 point for each $1 spent; and sometimes they run points multiplier sales events where you get 2x or 3x the points.
If you wish, you can join their membership program where you can get 20% off every purchase, monthly gifts and more perks like early access to new products or free package insurance.
RMO Compared to Other Brands
As a savvy internet shopper, I am sure you are comparing popular essential oil reviews and brands by name. If you’ve spent any time on my blog, you’re likely familiar with my list of top 10 best essential oil brands.
But how does one brand name exactly stack up to another? Here is a quick comparison:
Rocky Mountain Oils vs Plant Therapy
The comparison between Rocky Mountain Oils and Plant Therapy is the hardest for me to make. Both brands have a significant line-up of products and offer good quality, 3rd party tested oils.
To me, RMO’s blends are probably what stands out the most as I tend to like them better than the ones over at Plant Therapy. But with RMO, you have to be careful not to use some of their blends in your diffuser as some also contain Fractionated Coconut Oil. This is of course fully disclosed on the bottle labels, but it still means you cannot diffuse those blends as it could clog the diffuser. Use them topically only, for massages or DIY products.
The Rocky Mountain Oil Immune Strength blend is an “exception”. It does not contain Fractionated Coconut Oil (FCO), and it is a fabulous blend as an alternative to the popular Young Living Thieves. Make sure to always read the labels of RMO blends though, or shop over at Plant Therapy where there are no blends sold with FCO.
Oil | Rocky Mountain Oils | Plant Therapy |
Organic Lavender | $25.95 * (15 ml) | $8.99 * (10 ml) |
Immune Strength Blend | $26.95 * (15 ml) | $10.99 * (10 ml) |
Please also note the difference in oil bottle size in these comparisons.
Rocky Mountain Oils vs doTERRA
RMO and doTERRA essential oils seem to be in similar price ranges across single essential oils and oil blends. doTERRA doesn’t disclose or quantify any USDA organic certification. This is why I couldn’t cross-compare an organic oil.
DoTERRA promotes and explains their own internal CPTG® grade of therapeutic oils. The problem with that is that no other company uses the CPTG classification. The USDA label at least is comparable between different brands. For USDA organic oils, or to price-compare them to other USDA organics, shop at Rocky Mountain Oils.
If you’re after an oil blend, Rocky Mountain essential oils offer a selection of 62 blends, while doTERRA has 25 to pick from. Use this easy comparison chart if you have a favorite doTERRA blend that you’d like to find at RMO.
Oil | Rocky Mountain Oils | doTERRA |
Oregano | $18.95 * (15 ml) | $31.85 * (15 ml) |
Balance Blend | $22.95 * (15 ml) | $32.00 * (15 ml) |
Rocky Mountain Oils vs Young Living
Young Living is a MLM company and that makes the oils there more pricey. But I was quite surprised to find an equal quality Orange oil (Citrus sinensis), at such a large price difference.
I know that price isn’t everything, but it does have to be looked at! Orange is a very common essential oil and super easy to source. Here is the price comparison:
Oil | Rocky Mountain Oils | Young Living |
Orange | $8.95 * (15 ml) | $29.00 * (15 ml) |
Migraine Support Blend | $25.95 * (15 ml) | $39.99 * (15 ml) |
Rocky Mountain Oils and Young Living oils are easy to compare for price as they both come in 15ml bottle size. Many other popular essential oil brands use 10 ml bottles.
If you have a favorite blend from Young Living that you’d like to find at RMO, use this easy comparison chart to look it up!
Rocky Mountain Oils vs Edens Garden
Price-wise, Rocky Mountain essential oils land somewhere in the middle between super expensive MLMs, and value-oriented brands. Edens Garden is definitely on the less expensive side of oils, although they still do not skimp on quality control or testing procedures.
Edens Garden provides full GC/MS reports for download on their website, proving no contamination or adulteration in their oils. You’ll find these on each of their product pages if you scroll down a bit.
Oil | Rocky Mountain Oils | Edens Garden |
Clary Sage | $30.95 * (15 ml) | $12.95 * (10 ml) |
Calming Blend | $32.95 * (15 ml) | $9.95 * (10 ml) |
Please note the bottle size difference in this price comparison.
* Prices as on the brand websites or Amazon at time of writing and can change without notice
If this intrigues you, have a look at what Edens Garden has to offer as an essential oil brand for you and your family.
Final Thoughts
To summarize all I know about Rocky Mountain Oils, this company is in it for the long haul and deserves my trust and business. It is most definitely one of the best essential oil brands you can shop with today.
I appreciate the independent third-party testing process that they send their oils through.
At a mid-range price point, Rocky Mountain Oil sells pure essential oils that you can trust.
While there are other oils and brands I could shop with, I still have my RMO favorites that I can’t find anywhere else. And with free shipping options available, it’s just as handy as buying on Amazon. Their return policy is actually better when purchasing oils directly from them, with a 90 day return window instead of Amazon’s 30 days.
If you have questions or would like to share your own RMO experience, I’d love to hear from you! Please leave your note in the comments below.

Cindy
I am looking for good quality essential oils with the lowest cost for making soaps and body scrubs, what brand would you recommend?
Emma Carter
Hi Cindy, Plant Therapy offers their essential oils in a 100 ml bottle size, which can be quite cost effective when making your own products. They are good quality! They also have a wholesale program. If you qualify there, you may be able to save even more. And, at Plant Therapy you can use code EOHAVEN at checkout for an additional 10% off.
Eli
Hi Emma
what do you think about Doterra essential oils ?
Which one is better and safer Dottera or Rocky?
Thank you
Emma Carter
Hi Eli, thanks for your question! I think doTerra sells good essential oils, I’ve reviewed them here in detail. Personally, I prefer buying from Rocky Mountain Oils since it operates in a non-MLM business structure. This article here, while not about doTerra OR RMO, would answer a lot of questions in regards to MLM vs non-MLM companies. However, doTerra does advocate for internal use of oils, whereas Rocky Mountain Oils does not. If you plan to use oils internally, buy doTerra. If not, buy RMO. Hope this helps! ?
Sherry Tatum
Thanks
Sherry Tatum
Are some of Rocky Mountain essential oils therapeutic grade❓
Laurie
Thank you, Emma, for your comprehensive (and seemingly objective) review. It is very helpful. I have used Young Living for 8 years – from a consumer perspective but not doing it as a business. I chose YL because I did trust the purity and effectiveness which is most important to me. However, your comparison blog has allowed me to understand how I can get an equal (or better???) quality oil without the high price of YL. And, like others have said, I hate paying the high shipping that YL charges and having to wait 7 to 10 days for my order. Your wonderfully crafted comparison has given me the information I’ve been searching for for years that gives me the confidence that another company can offer the purity I want at a more fair price and service. Thank you, Emma!
Holly
Hello, which brand are you going with instead? I am trying to get off of YL.
Esther
Rocky Mountain oils states that a little less than half of their custom blends are diluted with 70% coconut oil to cut cost for the customer. This should be considered when making price comparisons with other companies. https://www.rockymountainoils.com/learn/what-is-neat/
Lisa Sims-Stevens
I absolutely love RMO. I’ve been using RMO for about a year, and I only have good things to say regarding this company. Their fast and free shipping on any size order is definitely a plus.
JMarieDirect
This is exactly what I was looking for. An honest overview. I personally resonate w Rocky Mountain oils for what I feel is quality and honesty. And last month happened into the Mountains rose store in Eugene, Oregon not knowing anything about them. Their store is magical and I came home with some facial skin oils and spray toners. I’m from Florida and was traveling through the west coast. I have some oils from Young Living and Now and Aura Cacia. And I would like to use them up so I can start fresh with a brand like RMO or MR. or now I will check out plant therapy. I’m not interested in MLM. I want to focus on my healing work and have my oil toolbox to facilitate the work, not distract. Thank you for the effort you put into this!!
Emma Carter
Hi JMarie, so glad to hear it & thanks for your feedback!
LAURITA KILGORE
Whether you use it topically or diffuse you are still ingesting the essential oil.
Emma Carter
Hi Laurita, thank you for your comment. Your body absorbs essential oils safely via smell or diluted with a carrier oil through the skin. The problem with ingestion through the mouth, esophagus and stomach is that the full strength oils come in contact with mucous lining and other sensitive organs in that way. Please read our expert roundup opinions at https://www.essentialoilhaven.com/using-essential-oils-safely/ to learn the full picture about ingesting essential oils and what different brands advertise on that topic.
robert miller
Do you have Nerve Repair Oil
Emma
Hi Robert. Yes, Rocky Mountain Oils offers a “Nerve Support” oil. Find it here: https://www.rockymountainoils.com/nerve-support.html
Ada
I have patronized both RMOs and YL. Just have the feeling that RMOs are always a lot cheaper than YL. I have done quite a bit of reading online and it seems like both offer high quality essential oils. I suppose the differences in price is due to YL oil being organic all the time while RMOs products are just partially organic, I guess.
Also, the YL monthly purchasing plan does make me feel a bit uneasy and alarmed since so many of your superiors seem to be very eagerly promoting oils to you in order to earn more commission. I never join the monthly program coz it makes me feel bad.
Jocelyn
Me too, I have a lot of interest in YL after a bit of researching about essential oils, but their complicated program just simply put me back from purchasing.
Av
Hi! Have you had any experience with Barefūt essential oils? Thanks for all the other good reviews, very helpful!
Emma Carter
Hi Av, I haven’t heard of Barefut yet, but I will add it to my list of essential oil companies to review in the future! Thank you.
Denice
Can you use RMO internally?
Emma
Hi Denice. No you need to use caution when using essential oils internally. Not many brands really advertise that you can, could, or even should do so. Have a read through my blog post “Which essential oils are safe to ingest?” It contains quite a lot of good info!
Jodie
Hi, are the RMO organic?
Emma
Hi Jodie, no, as a blanket statement, they are not all “certified” organic. However, some (not all) oils are labeled USDA Certified Organic and offer incredible quality. Look for the USDA logo on the bottles.
Anna
Would you recommend Young Living or Rocky Mountain Oils? Cost is not an issue, I am just looking for the best quality and most effective.
Emma Carter
Anna, I would personally choose to shop at Rocky Mountain Oils instead of Young Living. Especially the RMO certified organic line is absolutely fantastic!
Ashley
I placed my first order with RMO on 04/25 **FREE SHIPPING** and it is to be delivered today, 4/28 => IMPRESSIVE!!!!!
Compared to an order I placed w/ Young Living on 4/22 *SHIPPING COST $7.99* and it will not be delivered until next week.
I am sticking w/ RMO! Thank you for the quick service!
April
That’s exactly why I’m seeking a different supplier. Nearly 17 days when you do the 3-5 shipping with young living.
Jen
RMO, to me, is the best option out there that is not an MLM. When I want an oil that is not offered by the company I buy from, I will absolutely get it from RMO. It seems that RMO rivals Mountain Rose Herbs, but I trust the sourcing from RMO more because it is so transparent. It is very difficult to find any info on the sourcing of Mountain Rose Herbs, other than the organic certification.
Mindy Owley
Hi Emma,
I too am just getting started this year with Essential Oils. I’ve been doing a lot of research and your site has been very helpful. I shop multiple brands since no one brand has everything I’m looking for. RMO currently has 77 single oils and 60 blends. I thought you might want to update your info for them.
Thanks for all your research.
Mindy Owley
Emma
Hello Mindy, great catch, thank you so much for letting me know. I’ve updated my page :)
